April 18th, 2008: Xianggang at Yunnan

I only got about three hours of sleep last night. I had to get up early this morning for my Economic Growth test, and then had to do a 10 minute presentation, in Chinese, on Chinese-Japanese relations. But at least that's all done with. I'm sure tired, though, and I've got a Japanese history final tomorrow. Anyway, this isn't the best writeup in the world. Sorry!

Xianggang Reds at Yunnan Bulls

YUNNAN – A three run 9th inning rally by the Bulls before a throng of frenzied fans turned a sure loss into a dramatic victory. The scoring all came with two out in the bottom of the ninth, off Xianggang’s Ugueth Urbina and Takahito Nomura, once again exposing the weak bullpen that has prevented the Reds from winning a single game so far this season.

Yunnan actually began the game with a 1-0 lead, which eventually grew to 3-1. Bulls starter Jason Schmidt, however, began to fall apart. By the time the seventh inning stretch came along, the visitors were nursing a 6-3 lead.

It all unraveled in the Bulls’ final two frames. The bottom of the eight was highlighted by Home Run Johnson scoring on an Al Simmons single. The bottom of the ninth was similar. Pinch hitter Andy Van Slyke hit a two out triple with a man on. Sherry Magee singled him home, stole second, reached third on a Home Run Johnson single, and then scored on George Sisler’s single.

The batting star for the Reds was Hank Greenberg, with two home runs.
